(...) Brava is a small island in terms of land area, but vast in terms of the size of its community scattered across the globe. There are people from Brava in different countries and continents, living very different lives, yet maintaining, in one way or another, an emotional, familial, cultural, and economic connection to the land where they were born or from which their parents and grandparents came. This community constitutes one of Brava’s greatest human assets and deserves to be regarded as a true part of the island’s heritage. (...)

City of Nova Sintra, September 21, 2026 (Bravanews) - Today, on the island of Brava, another school year begins.
The Cachaço road on Brava Island seems to be heading toward a tragedy waiting to happen. The condition of the roadway and the lack of guardrails at various points along the route pose a constant danger to drivers, passengers, and, above all, to the students who use the school bus every day. This is not a concern that has just been raised today, nor is it an isolated warning. It is a reality that is plain for all to see and that demands an urgent response before it is too late.

City of Nova Sintra, September 1, 2026 (Bravanews) — Some public works projects may disappear from political discourse, but they do not fade from the public’s memory. On the island of Brava, some of these projects remain a part of daily life and the citizens’ expectations. These were initiatives launched by the previous government that, for various reasons, seem to have been sidelined in the current government’s communications. Among them are the water desalination project on Brava, the alternative road from Fajã d’Água to Palhal, and the renovation of the Nossa Senhora do Monte School. These are projects that transcend partisan disputes and concern the island’s development. For this reason, the silence surrounding them deserves to be questioned. Brava cannot be remembered only when it is time to ask for votes.

City of Nova Sintra – Cabo Verde Interilhas (CVI) has once again provoked outrage on Brava Island by distancing itself, in a letter sent to the mayor of Brava, from responsibility for transporting cargo to the island during one of the most sensitive periods of the year: Christmas and New Year. Faced with repeated appeals from merchants and the population, the company simply pointed the finger at the Government of Cape Verde, the port authorities, and the regulatory authorities of the maritime sector, in a stance that many describe as "washing its hands" of a serious and persistent problem.

For decades, Brava Island has been trapped in a vicious cycle of dependency, political promises, and delayed solutions. With each crisis—be it maritime transport, the supply of essential goods, healthcare, or even something as basic as eggs—the same script repeats itself: popular outrage, press releases, occasional visits from government officials, fiery speeches… and, after some time, everything returns to the same. The central problem lies not only in the lack of resources, but above all in the way the island has historically positioned itself in relation to the central government.

In Cape Verde, the debate around the reinstatement allowance for political office holders comes up again and again, almost always shrouded in controversy, popular indignation and a general feeling of social injustice. The central question is repeated: is this an illegal benefit or a legitimate right under the law? The legal answer is clear - it is not illegal. But the ethical and moral question remains open and increasingly uncomfortable.

Nova Sintra City, December 16, 2025 (Bravanews) - The island of Brava, historically the birthplace of intellectuals and sailors and one of Cape Verde's largest sources of emigration, is facing a bittersweet dilemma that is rewriting its architectural and social landscape. The once proud houses, built with the sweat and remittances of their children in the diaspora, are falling into a state of advanced disrepair, turning into veritable "shantytowns" in the heart of the towns and villages. This phenomenon is a mute testimony to the disconnection between emigrants and their homeland, and reveals the institutional paralysis that is preventing the island's urban regeneration.

One of the situations that has attracted the most attention - and concern - is the political relationship between the former mayor of Brava, Francisco Tavares, and municipal deputy João José Delgado. According to various local sources, Delgado has been acting as a kind of unofficial spokesman for the former mayor, in a strategy that has generated deep discomfort within the party's structures.

The PAICV in Brava and its main leaders accused then President Francisco Tavares of influence peddling, corruption, nepotism and embezzlement of public money. The population was led to believe that the previous administration was hiding obscure schemes that were holding back the island's progress.

(...) Brava Island, often described as the "island of flowers" for its natural charm and rich cultural heritage, is currently facing one of the greatest challenges in its recent history: the erosion of its social fabric. Beyond the well-known structural difficulties—such as emigration, geographic isolation, and lack of investment—an internal phenomenon is also growing that threatens to undermine the community's ability to reinvent itself and move forward. This is what some call the "pity-industrial complex," a deep-rooted culture of victimization and dependency that has weakened social cohesion and the spirit of initiative on the island.

City of Pawtucket, August 16, 2025 (Bravanews) - The island of Brava, known for its strong emigration and the strong sense of community of its inhabitants, has been the scene of a phenomenon that, at first glance, seems promising, but which in practice has generated more confusion than unity: the proliferation of groups that share similar names and goals, but which, paradoxically, end up creating divisions. The rise of "Bravenses Unidos" and "Brava Unidos" perfectly illustrates this complex dynamic, raising the question of whether we are really working for the good of the island or whether we are unwittingly weakening our own efforts.

However, an in-depth analysis of the results reveals a more complex and nuanced picture, with the population's clear rejection of Francisco Tavares and his influence, the significant strengthening of the Movement for Democracy (MpD) in the Municipal Assembly and an internal warning within the MpD itself about Tavares' future role.
