Elections/MpD: Paulo Veiga convinced he will be the new party president on Sunday.
The candidate for leadership of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), Paulo Veiga, expressed his conviction today that his candidacy will win the internal elections on Sunday, the 6th, due to the way his message and proposals have been received.
Paulo Veiga spoke earlier this afternoon at the closing of the campaign, which took place on the pedestrian street of Brasil, in Achada Santo António, in the city of Praia, and which once again featured the presence and intervention of the former Prime Minister and first president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), Carlos Veiga.
"I am very moved by the number and the way in which MpD militants have received our messages and our program. I am convinced that tomorrow, starting at 4:00 PM, we will be the new president of the MpD," emphasized Paulo Veiga.
Under the slogan "A vision that unites," the candidate wants to have "a different party, closer to the base of its members, present in all neighborhoods and circles," to allow them to give their opinion and present their concerns and problems.
For Paulo Veiga, being closer to the people will allow him to understand what is really happening in Cape Verde, in order to create alternative solutions and policies for the country's development.
“I strongly believe this, therefore, a political party cannot govern without its base, it cannot exist only with the leadership, since those who rule the political party are its members,” he stated, emphasizing that Cape Verdean youth must participate in decisions and manage the party.
In this sense, he promised to make the party "a participatory MpD, open to civil society, with differing opinions and ideas," and, through conversation and understanding, to arrive "at a better path."
“No one owns the truth; I may have a doctorate, the other may be a fisherman, but he knows better how to catch a fish. If we don't listen to each other, we will hardly achieve the ambition of the Cape Verdean people,” he pointed out, arguing that the MpD must once again be the party where “everyone has a voice and a place.”
On that occasion, he considered that the MpD “is the mother, the father of democracy”, and in this sense he wants all mothers to be able to be part of the party's management, with energy and wisdom, in order to put the party back on the path to victory.
On the other hand, he acknowledged that the party also needs to regain the trust of Cape Verdeans, and in this sense argued that it is necessary to take the lead in the party so that the country can have "more transparency and sustainable development".
The candidates Herménio Fernandes, mayor of São Miguel, and Luís Filipe Tavares, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, remain in the race for the leadership of the MpD.
The vote to elect the new president of the MpD is scheduled for Sunday, the 6th.
