Joana Rosa wants a presidency based on engagement and dialogue with citizens
Joana Rosa, a candidate in the 2026 presidential election, stated today that her candidacy represents “civil society” and is “open to Cape Verde,” advocating for a presidency that is accessible to the people, based on dialogue with citizens, and committed to the independent exercise of constitutional powers.
The candidate made the statement during a press conference, following the Movement for Democracy’s (MpD) announcement of its support for her candidacy for President of the Republic.
Joana Rosa assured that she does not seek a presidency that is “closed in on itself,” but rather a leadership role that serves as a model, grounded in balance, institutional dignity, dialogue, and the defense of the Republic’s enduring interests.
“We are building a candidacy that serves as an open, pluralistic, and unifying platform, capable of bringing together those who think differently, those with different backgrounds, and those who, above all, believe that Cape Verde can do more and do better,” she maintained.
The candidate said she also intends to exercise a “judiciary of influence” to contribute to the country’s development, poverty reduction, and the improvement of Cape Verdeans’ standard of living, as well as to combat other social problems.
Joana Rosa also defended the need to promote awareness of the Constitution of the Republic among Cape Verdeans, so that they may know their rights and demand compliance with constitutional principles.
The former Minister of Justice thanked the MpD for its support and trust, but emphasized that, from this point forward, she intends to “reach far beyond party lines.”
“This candidacy aims to bring together all those who believe in the balance of power, the strength of institutions, democracy, and the exercise of power based on the duty to serve,” she asserted.
The candidate noted that a collective electoral platform is being developed, based on feedback gathered during visits to various islands. The platform is expected to be presented shortly and aims to reflect the proposals and concerns gathered from citizens.
In the coming days, Joana Rosa assured that the campaign leadership—which, according to the candidate, is already in place and operational—will be introduced, and the campaign manager will be announced.
When asked about Milton Paiva’s decision to proceed with his candidacy despite the MpD’s selection of Joana Rosa, the candidate stated that this is a democratic process. “People have the right to run. Therefore, the presidential candidacy is a personal matter,” she said.
