Lomba Tantum Cable Car Breaks Down Again, Leaving Fishermen and Fish Sellers in Despair

City of Nova Sintra, August 31, 2026 (Bravanews) - Recurring malfunctions of the Lomba Tantum cable car have once again brought the transport of fish to a standstill, plunging the local fishing community into a situation of uncertainty and severe operational difficulties. The cable car, which is essential for overcoming the steep incline between the port of Tantum and the upper part of town, stopped working just as several boats were returning from the sea with substantial catches.

Faced with this problem, fishermen and fishmongers have been forced to carry hundreds of kilograms of fish on their heads and shoulders, climbing the steep slope up the area’s long flight of steps. This makeshift solution requires intense and exhausting physical effort, posing serious risks to the health and physical well-being of all workers involved in the process.

In addition to the physical strain, the delay in transport seriously compromises the freshness and quality of the fish, drastically reducing its market value. The delay in distribution directly impacts the income of dozens of families who depend exclusively on fishing to make ends meet.

Fishing professionals are expressing growing outrage over the constant breakdowns of the infrastructure, claiming that the situation has become unsustainable. According to the community, the latest repair is not an adequate response to the scale of the problem, serving only as short-term, temporary solutions.

Female fishmongers, in particular, denounce the harsh conditions they face daily in order to get their products to local points of sale. The inability to use the cable car delays transportation to urban centers, often resulting in irreparable financial losses at the end of each workday.

The fishing community is therefore calling for firm and urgent action by local and central government authorities. The main demand is to move beyond stopgap measures and proceed with a comprehensive modernization plan for this infrastructure, which is strategic to the region’s economy.

Workers are demanding the implementation of a definitive, long-lasting solution, accompanied by a rigorous preventive maintenance plan. The community maintains that the installation of a modern and reliable transportation system is a basic right necessary to ensure Lomba Tantum’s dignified economic development.

The impact of the breakdown extends beyond the fishing sector, indirectly affecting all local commerce and the social fabric of the community. The halt in freight transport at the port creates an economic bottleneck that further weakens the economy of this seaside community.

While awaiting a formal response from the relevant authorities, industry operators continue to brave the sea and the hillside with the meager resources at their disposal. The resilience demonstrated on the ground contrasts with the urgent need for administrative measures to permanently resolve this structural problem.

Sources close to the General Directorate of Fisheries told Bravanews that a Cabnave technician will return to Brava Island to assess the situation and repair the cable car.

The general expectation is that the responsible authorities will commit to resolving the impasse promptly, ensuring the replacement or full rehabilitation of the cable car to restore normalcy and safety to the daily work of fishermen and fishmongers.
