Young farmer on Brava Island summoned by authorities after desperate plea on social media

Nova Sintra, June 5, 2026 (Bravanews) — What was meant to be a cry for help in the face of a severe crisis has turned into a court case that is sparking strong outrage on Ilha Brava. Gabriel Correia, a young local farmer who took to social media to denounce the loss of his crops and the death of his animals due to extreme water shortages, was surprised today with a court summons.

The complaint was filed by the representative of the Águabrava company on the island, Ms. Ida Solidade—precisely the person whom the young man had asked to intervene and provide support to save his livelihood.

A few days ago, Gabriel Correia posted an emotional video that quickly resonated with the local community and the diaspora. In the footage, the young man showed the completely parched land and devastated crops, describing the heartbreaking sight of his animals dying of thirst. In the video, the farmer appealed directly to the relevant authorities and the water supplier, Águabrava, for an urgent solution to mitigate the impact of the drought on his property.

However, instead of receiving a technical team to assess the situation or a proposal for emergency aid, Gabriel was visited by authorities with a summons to appear in court.

In exclusive statements to Bravanews, Gabriel expressed his complete bewilderment at the turn of events. The young man stated that he was unaware of the legal grounds or the exact motivations behind the complaint filed by Ida, but he has no doubts about the underlying purpose of the action.

Gabriel stated that this is nothing more than a clear attempt at intimidation, intended to silence him so he cannot speak out about the desperate situation he finds himself in—and in which many other farmers also find themselves. The young man also vented that seeing a lifetime’s work wither away and the animals suffer is a cause for revolt, not a crime.

The news of the summons hit Ilha Brava like a bombshell, where water scarcity has been a central topic of debate and concern for the sustainability of the agricultural sector. On social media and in the streets of Nova Sintra, many citizens and fellow professionals have already expressed solidarity with Gabriel Correia, criticizing the stance of the Águabrava police chief.

Residents argue that criminalizing the desperation of a young man trying to survive off the land sends a dangerous signal to the island’s entire farming community, at a time when encouraging young people to settle in rural areas should be the institutions’ top priority.

To date, Águabrava’s central administration and Representative Ida have not issued any official statement to clarify the details of the complaint or the company’s position regarding the supply crisis reported by the farmer. The matter remains open for the parties involved to present their sides of the story. Gabriel Correia is scheduled to appear before judicial authorities next Sunday, June 7.
