Former presidential candidate Gilson Alves is banned from leaving the country, prohibited from making contacts, and has had his right to deliver speeches of the same nature as the one he gave to Cape Verde Television (TCV) suspended, according to a decision by the Judicial Court of the District of São Vicente, applied after the first interrogation. The information was released this Tuesday, the 3rd, by the Attorney General's Office (PGR).

The coercive measures were decreed within the scope of a process in which the defendant is strongly suspected of committing the crimes of public incitement to crime, gang or criminal association, and possession of weapons, as foreseen and punished by national criminal law.

According to the Attorney General's Office, the investigation originated from the public disclosure of statements made by the defendant on February 16, 2026, during an interview given to TCV, which was subsequently widely disseminated on social media and other digital platforms.

According to the evidence in the case file, the defendant allegedly made statements that could constitute incitement to the use of force, advocacy for the establishment of an authoritarian regime, and calls for the adoption of violent measures against certain professional categories and institutions of the Republic.

The document further states that, in the aforementioned video, hooded individuals are shown wielding bladed weapons, a circumstance which, combined with the content of the statements made, reinforces the intimidating nature of the message and increases the risk of public disorder.

Given the nature and seriousness of the facts, as well as the dangers of disrupting the investigation, preserving and verifying evidence, potential flight, and continuing criminal activity, detention was ordered outside of flagrant offense, in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The aforementioned process remains under investigation and is subject to judicial secrecy.
