WaterBrava Representative in Brava Clarifies Responsibilities Regarding Water Connections for Agriculture
Nova Sintra, June 6, 2026 (Bravanews) – The representative of the intermunicipal water company, ÁguaBrava, on the island of Brava, clarified to Bravanews that the local office does not have the legal authority to make unilateral decisions regarding new water connections for the agricultural sector.
The reaction comes in the wake of local demands for access to this precious resource for irrigation. In direct statements, the local official was categorical in defining the limits of her duties and pointing out the correct institutional path for resolving this type of issue.
"I do not have the authority to authorize or install water connections on my own," stated the Delegate. "The City Council is aware of this situation."
With this statement, the Delegate refers strategic management and guidelines for irrigation water to the City of São Filipe, where the company’s headquarters are located, emphasizing that the dispute with the resident—identified as Mr. Gabi—could have been avoided or formally resolved had the appropriate institutional channels been utilized.
ÁguaBrava assures that it continues to work on the distribution and management of the island’s water resources, but emphasizes that the screening and authorization of high-impact projects, such as agriculture, depend on close coordination with the company’s policies.
