The announcement was made by the organisation's coordinator, Domitille Le Huédé, at the end of a training course aimed at associations in Brave, which took place over five days, with the aim of strengthening the capacity and dynamics of associations in Brave.

According to the same source, SMILO is just a facilitator of the process of transforming Brava, a sustainable island, as the objective is for the Brava partners to carry out this process.

From there, he advanced that the next step is to reactivate the local committee that was created in October 2021, which involves the island's partners, civil society, the city council, representation of state delegations and partners, economic sectors and the transport sector that will decide what they want for Brava Island and the most appropriate sustainable vision.

“Together we are going to carry out a diagnosis on each of the themes and areas of SMILO, namely the current situation on the island in terms of waste, water, landscape, biodiversity”, said the same source, stressing that in this process the priority actions that will be identified will be identified. Brave communities want to create and share a common vision for a sustainable future on the island.

As for the training itself, she made a “positive assessment” taking into account the participation of the associations, the shared and demonstrated motivation, which leads her to believe that they are engaged in the process and management of the island as a sustainable island.

He also stressed that the members of the associations that were present in this training undertook to create a group to meet monthly to coordinate the activities of the associations in order to streamline them for environmental conservation, waste management, among other activities on the island. .

In turn, Dheeraj Jayant, director of Biflores, considered that this was an excellent initiative, taking into account the work that Biflores has ahead of it with the communities, as the intention is to develop actions in all communities, with a focus on transforming the island in a protected area.

From there, he underlined the importance of kicking off with the training and qualification of members of the various associations on the island, training them in work, organization and preparation of projects, but also how to seek national and international funding for them.

After this phase, this official highlighted as a positive point the fact that these associations decided to meet monthly to work together and in harmony, but also considered that this is a “democratic” way to work in the management of the island's natural resources.

SMILO is a French NGO, based in Marseille, which works with an international network of islands and has a presence on 40 islands.

In Cape Verde, the NGO has already worked with the island of Santa Luzia and will now start work on Ilha Brava for sustainable management in five thematic areas, namely energy, water and sanitation, biodiversity and landscape.
