Carlos Burgo criticizes the assessment of 10 years of governance and warns of challenges in the upcoming legislative elections in Cape Verde.
Former Member of Parliament for the Brava constituency, Carlos Burgo, recently published a critical reflection on the current political situation in Cape Verde, just months before the next legislative elections.
In his analysis, Carlos Burgo highlights that, during election periods, it is natural for voters to evaluate the performance of the government in office. In this context, he argues for the importance of revisiting the electoral program presented by the current majority in 2016, which was characterized at the time as ambitious and geared towards the modernization of the country.
According to the former deputy, after ten years in government, the assessment is "disappointing." Burgo states that, after assuming power, the executive's priority has been political consolidation and the satisfaction of partisan interests, to the detriment of implementing structural reforms considered essential.
Among the criticisms raised, the alleged continuation and worsening of negative practices in Public Administration stands out, as well as the lack of progress on important reforms. The former parliamentarian mentions, in particular, the failure to implement the reform of taxation on property and real estate transactions, considered crucial for strengthening municipal finances.
Carlos Burgo also questions the government's actions in the state-owned business sector, pointing to contradictions between the initial liberal discourse and subsequent practices, including the suspension of privatization processes and the movement of executives between public positions and concessionary companies.
In his publication, the former deputy concludes that Cape Verde has experienced a deficit of structural reforms over the last few decades, also warning of concerns regarding the proposals presented by political forces aspiring to come to power.
This stance comes at a time of growing political debate in the country, as the next election cycle approaches.
