Brava: Homeless resident has difficulty accepting help

Anyone who passes through the city of Nova Sintra will see an individual named Carlos, pushing himself in a wheelchair. He lost both legs, they say due to an infection contracted on the streets. Many local residents, nonprofit organizations, and volunteers offered assistance, including food, warm clothing, and access to temporary shelter. However, the citizen in question has been reluctant to accept the help.

Bravanews went after the information and in conversation with the Mayor of Brava, he claims to be aware of this situation, but claims that the city council is open to helping, as it has done on several occasions, but the individual does not cooperate.

“He doesn’t want to live with his family and has a horrible temperament and behavior”, claims the mayor, adding that the City Council had previously arranged a residence for him, including furnishing it.

While some speculate that their reluctance to accept help may be a result of past negative experiences or a lack of trust in institutions, others believe that mental health issues may be contributing to their situation. Local authorities and aid groups are committed to finding a solution that respects the person's autonomy whilst providing the support they need.

"We are aware of this person's situation and we have social assistance and mental health teams ready to help," said Francisco Tavares. "Our main goal is to establish a dialogue and build a trusting relationship so that we can offer appropriate assistance when he is ready to accept it."

Tavares goes further and said that the institution he heads is ready to help. “The CMB will rent him a room, but he must accept to live there and the issue of food through the Red Cross, medical care and bath has already been resolved”, said the President of the Chamber, but “Carlos must accept the help and respect employees, other users and comply with the rules”.

This story highlights the complex challenges many homeless people face every day. Many factors, including past trauma, mental health problems and social barriers, can make it difficult for some people to accept help. However, the community and local authorities remain committed to providing support and seeking solutions that allow these citizens to reintegrate into society.

The plight of the citizen with amputated legs in Nova Sintra is a reminder that empathy, patience and understanding play a key role in addressing the challenges homeless people face, and that the road to recovery can be long and complex. but not impossible.
