Brava: Director of CENS makes positive assessment of the 2nd quarter, predicting improvement in year-end results

The director of Complexo Educativo de Nova Sintra (CENS) today made a “positive assessment” of the results for the second quarter and the objectives initially set, predicting an improvement in the results at the end of the year.

Speaking to the press, David Pascoal considered that it was a “relatively quiet” quarter in terms of activities and perspectives and the results were quite satisfactory, with 86 percent (%) of positive grades in Mandatory Basic Education (EBO) and around 90 % of positive grades in Secondary Education, which predicts an end of the year with better results than in the previous academic year.

As for the subjects where the students had greater difficulties, he highlighted that the 2nd year EBO students had some difficulties in all three core subjects, namely Portuguese Language, Mathematics and Integrated Sciences, and in the 6th and 7th year students also presented difficulties, with relatively lower grades, although they achieved values above 72% of success.

In these last two classes, he underlined that in the disciplines of History, Geography, Mathematics and Portuguese they had slightly lower grades, but even so, he was at an acceptable level.

In Secondary Education, David Pascoal pointed out that only some 11th grade classes presented some difficulties.

On the issue of support for needy students, he stressed that the CENS board has carried out various activities to raise funds and improve the school canteen menu for students with hot meals, has mobilized support in order to guarantee school materials for students with certain needs , noting that they managed to get support from Associação Amigos das Escolas da Brava, which donated 50 uniforms, worth around 130,000 escudos, to be given to students who had difficulties in acquiring the uniform.

Regarding school transport, he showed that in Brava, students have this service free of charge, as it is funded by the Municipality of Brava in partnership with the Cape Verdean Foundation for Social and School Action (Ficase) and that it has been working normally.

An issue that this official indicated as being one of the goals of the CENS is to guarantee an effective participation of parents and guardians, where various activities have been carried out with the aim of bringing parents closer to schools, considering that it has gradually been improving, even if is not yet at a desired level, but the focus is on achieving that objective.

Asked about any difficulties or constraints that the CENS is experiencing, David Pascoal informed that at the moment one of the major constraints has to do with the recruitment of administrative staff, operational support staff and for the secretariat, a deficit that is expected to be resolved shortly.
