Escola Secundária Eugénio Tavares (ESET) marked today, the 10th, the 70th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights with a set of recreational and sports activities, encouraging students to pay more attention to this matter.

David Pascoal, director of ESET and the Educational Complex of Nova Sintra, explained to Inforpress that the objective was to promote and disseminate information about human rights among the educational community, so that everyone understands the importance of human rights for humanity .

According to the official, it is not “only on paper or documents”, but in day-to-day activities, with “special attention” to the right to education, health, justice, among others that he considered to be the most present in daily aspects.

He added that they carried out a range of stimulating activities, with the aim of making the student active and making him look for answers, to see if the message they pass on is the “most representative” possible.

Asked about his vision regarding the demand for information on Human Rights on the island, this official stressed that this demand has not been different from the context at national level.

Because, as he explained, if someone is feeling aggrieved, they “fight, try to inform”, but, otherwise, people remain in “anonymous passivity”, until drastic cases arise to manifest themselves.

However, he reminded society that human rights were declared precisely with the aim of “demonstrating equality among human beings”, emphasizing that it is necessary not only to see the issue of rights, but that these must always be associated with the duties that every citizen has.

At school, he stressed that despite not having a publicity campaign, there are specific disciplines that deal with these themes, such as Citizenship, Personal and Social Training, Philosophy, Law, among others.

Some students demonstrated a broad knowledge of the subject, while others did not.

Student Erickson Silva, from the 9th grade, said that human rights are essential and that everyone should have an idea of the topic and what they are talking about.

Regarding human rights on the island, he said that Brava has been complying with them, but underlined that there are some cases in which these rights “are not respected”, exemplifying with the case of the disabled, who, according to him, often they are “discriminated” in society, even when accessing public places.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 10, 1948.

The document defines the 30 basic rights of all human beings, everywhere, regardless of any condition, and is translated into more than 500 languages.
