Brava: Family in Fajã d'Água loses everything in suspicious fire and asks for help to "get their lives back together"

The owner, Suzete da Luz, explained to Inforpress that the family was not in the house at the time of the fire because they were staying overnight in a small house near the sea. The alert only came the following morning, through neighbors, when the flames had already consumed the structure.

"When we went, it was already late. We had lost practically everything: mattresses, beds and the children's clothes. All that was left was a table and a television set," lamented the victim, who appealed for solidarity from the people of Brava, the local authorities and the town hall so that they could "put their lives back together again".

Suzete da Luz raised suspicions that the fire was set intentionally, noting that the door of the house was found open.

This thesis is reinforced by the head of Civil Protection in Brava, Hélder Brito, who confirmed to Inforpress that there were suspicious signs at the scene.

"We came across suspicious situations, such as a broken door and window. What's more, there was no electricity in the house, which rules out the possibility of a short circuit," he said, adding that "everything leads us to believe that this is a case of arson."

The Civil Protection team went to the scene after being called by the National Police, but limited themselves to doing the aftermath, since the building and belongings had already been reduced to ashes during the early hours of the morning.

The competent authorities are still investigating the case to determine who is responsible.
