Brava: ICIEG promotes training on gender, leadership and economic empowerment in rural areas.
The Cape Verdean Institute for Equality and Gender Equity (ICIEG) today began a two-day training course on gender equality and equity, masculinities, empowerment, leadership, associativism, and assertive communication on the island of Brava.
The training, which is carried out in partnership with the Rural Socioeconomic Opportunities Promotion Program (POSER), brings together between 25 and 30 participants, mostly men, and aims to strengthen the capacities of association leaders and community agents, promoting greater participation in local and economic development dynamics.
In statements to Inforpress, the president of ICIEG, Marisa Carvalho, explained that this action is the result of a partnership established with POSER and the diagnostic work carried out on the island last year.
“We were here in Brava last year to assess the needs and meet with the Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and our implementing partners. In designing the activities of Component 2 of POSER, it was established that Brava Island would be one of the priority islands to receive these training programs,” he stated.
According to that official, the objective is to contribute to the creation of a more dynamic associative movement, especially in rural areas, considered strategic for the economic empowerment of communities.
“We know that this is a key area in one of the components we also work on, which has to do with economic empowerment. We have been developing actions related to the green economy with several partners, including POSER, and the results have been quite positive,” he highlighted.
Marisa Carvalho further explained that, in addition to content related to gender, masculinities, and the deconstruction of stereotypes, the training includes modules on leadership, assertive communication, small business management, and associativism.
“We want to unite association leaders and people who work in this area, providing tools that we consider relevant for decision-making and for the reactivation of many associations here on the island,” he emphasized.
The president of ICIEG acknowledged that some local associations do not have the desired dynamism and that this initiative also aims to identify existing constraints and support their revitalization.
“We want to understand what is happening and, where possible, energize these associations, monitor and support them in order to create a true associative dynamic, which is a way to boost the market and activities related to the green economy,” he added.
During the opening session, participants also heard from representatives of the National Institute of Social Security (INPS), who addressed issues related to social protection on the island.
According to the same source, social protection coverage levels in Brava remain below desired standards, a situation that worries the institution.
“The issues of formalization and decent employment are all linked. We want people to develop income-generating activities, but for that income to be sustainable, formalized, and accompanied by social protection, to ensure greater security and stability for families,” he concluded.
The training runs until Wednesday, the 3rd, and is part of the actions to promote gender equality, social inclusion and strengthening of the rural associative fabric developed by ICIEG and POSER.
