The assistant ombudsman of Justice and the mayor of Brava today asked the people of Brava to always communicate when they feel they are being harmed or having their rights violated.

Vera Querido and Francisco Tavares launched this appeal at the end of an awareness-raising campaign carried out by the Ombudsman's Office this Tuesday, on Ilha Brava, where the deputy ombudsman spoke about the organ to the students of Escola Secundária Eugénio Tavares, entities and the population in general, at the town hall and in the town of Furna.

According to data released in the press release, during the five years and ten months of its mandate, the Ombudsman's Office received only three complaints from citizens of Brava.

Hence, the assistant provider stressed that she is on the island fulfilling the plan of activities, promising to continue with the actions, recognizing that they are insufficient when promoted only once.

Commenting on the data presented in relation to Brava, he recalled that, as the audience had said, “this is part of the idiosyncrasy” of the Brava people.

But even so, he explained that he is on the island to explain “what the body is, what it can do, how to address the Ombudsman”, he added, and ask for greater participation and involvement of the population, because “he believes that there is always something that is not 100 percent right”.

The official also added that if everyone contributes a little to the island, or to the country, surely there will be improvements and the central and local administration will be grateful for the contribution that citizens can make.

According to the same source, “we all make Cape Verde together and that is how we contribute to a better Cape Verde and to achieving so-called happiness”.

The mayor, Francisco Tavares, when analyzing the data, pointed out that this leads him to two types of reflections: “Either, people really do not believe in justice or, then, in fact, there are no cases for people have reasons to seek their rights and complain together with the Ombudsman”, pronounced the mayor.

However, the mayor stressed that he shares the idea that “silence does not mean that everything is fine, considering that it is, therefore, of “extreme importance” to raise awareness and publicize the Ombudsman body to a greater layer of the population.

In this way, he appealed to the population of Brava to participate in these activities, since the people of Brava must be informed and must communicate everything they think is being violated, especially their rights.

According to the mayor, the council is “fully open” to receiving any complaints from the people, always with a view to improving service provision and providing satisfaction.

Although he highlighted the work already done in the high school, in Furna and in the town hall, Francisco Tavares said that dissemination and awareness should continue, in the certainty that there are cases that need to be communicated to speed up the resolution of the process.

He also referred that there are cases in which people resort directly to justice, through lawyers, causing not only high personal costs, but, many times, they face the slowness of justice.

Therefore, he continued, if in a first approach they seek the services of the Ombudsman, the problem could be solved at zero cost and in a shorter period of time.
