Brava: Mayor satisfied with the participation of social actors in the socialization process of the Decentralization Fund

The mayor of Brava considered today that the engagement and participation of the island's social actors in the socialization of the Decentralization Fund demonstrates that the project to be submitted for funding will belong to everyone.

This statement was made to the press after the presentation and sharing of the project via videoconference to members of the Platform for Local Development in Brava, community development associations, decentralized State services and the local population.

After this presentation, Francisco Tavares stressed that the participation of more than thirty social actors on the island "demonstrates a commitment" to the return of the management of this program, to which the city council must present one or two projects of its Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development already prepared by the Platform to be implemented in the field.

With engagement verified today, the mayor revealed that the project to be implemented “will belong to everyone” and not a program “imposed by the municipality” or by one or another association.

According to the same source, these are projects that end up making some families escape poverty, gain economic independence and make the island win across the board.

The platform, as informed by the mayor, already has an ongoing project, Brava Fish, which could be one of the projects to be approved and financed with the Decentralization Fund, stressing that in a second phase it would need more funds for its operation.

This project, he explained, “will completely change the whole business around fishing and ends up making many families who live in the sector, directly or indirectly, take this activity as something professional, an income fund like another profession”.

He underlined, however, that it is still just a proposal that the city council will present and that, if approved, it will fit within the criteria for choosing projects for the Fund, but indicated that it will have enough money to finance another project.

After the presentation and socialization, Francisco Tavares advanced that they are prepared to start the next phase, namely the workshops for choosing the project and then the elaboration of all the bureaucratic, documental and conceptual part to be submitted to the evaluation committee for its approval.

The mayor also highlighted that the amount to be made available in favor of the island will be “significant”, equivalent to 10% of the average budget execution of the city council of Brava in this last term.

The Decentralization Fund will make a total of 2,800,000 euros available to finance projects for associations and city councils, with 2,300,000 euros to be shared among all 22 municipalities in the country.

According to the Government, the program seeks to finance projects identified and prioritized jointly by local councils and associations, and which are included in the Municipal Strategic Plans for Sustainable Development (PEMDS) already approved.

The projects will have a duration of 12 to 18 months and an implementation deadline of July 31, 2022.
