Nova Sintra City, October 20, 2026 (Bravanews) - The absence of cultural activities on the occasion of National Culture Day, celebrated on October 18, prompted an expression of sadness and criticism from a cultural agent on the island, who lamented the fact that Eugénio Tavares Square remained empty on a date dedicated to valuing Cape Verdean identity and traditions.

Cultural agent criticizes the absence of genuinely Brava-based activities on National Culture Day.

In a message released on October 18, 2026, the cultural agent expressed his disappointment at the lack of initiatives to mark the anniversary on the island of Flores.

"Today, a tear escaped my eye unexpectedly, but it reflects the sadness of seeing our square empty on this day," she wrote, in a statement marked by emotion and a feeling of disappointment.

The message raises questions about the importance attributed to the culture of Brava and about the role of the institutions responsible for promoting and stimulating cultural activities on the island. According to the agent, the absence of initiatives on such a symbolic date is a cause for concern for those who follow and value local cultural life.

“We should not consider the launch of a book, the Seven Suns Seven Moons festival, or activities commemorating the local High School Day as genuinely cultural activities that contribute to the promotion and preservation of our cultural identity,” he said.

The agent was even more critical of the criteria used in distributing portfolios and responsibilities to certain councilors, arguing that the selection of people for certain roles should take into account their vocation and professional experience in the respective area.

“Distributing portfolios is a great responsibility. If they don't have the vocation and experience in the area, diplomas are useless. It's proven!”, he stated, in a criticism that could fuel the debate about the competence and preparation of those who assume responsibilities in cultural management.

The cultural agent's demonstration thus reignites the discussion about the need for a more active cultural policy in Brava, capable of mobilizing artists, musicians, traditional groups, associations, and the general population. The organization of cultural activities constitutes an opportunity to preserve intangible heritage, value local talent, and strengthen the community's sense of belonging.
