Fogo: The Chã das Caldeiras Cooperative Winery Wins Three Medals at the World Extreme Wines Competition
The Chã das Caldeiras Winery/Cooperative won three medals at the 34th edition of the Mondial des Vins Extrêmes [World Competition of Extreme Wines], one of the leading international competitions dedicated to promoting mountain viticulture.
The Cape Verdean cooperative’s participation resulted in two Gold Medals, awarded to the Chã Branco 2025 and Passito 2025 wines, and a Grand Gold Medal, won by the Chã Rosé 2025.
Winning these three medals among more than 1,100 products from 28 countries reinforces the international recognition of wines produced in the crater of the island of Fogo.
Organized by the Center for Research, Study, Preservation, Coordination, and Promotion of Mountain Viticulture (Cervim), the competition brought together wines produced in regions where viticulture faces particularly challenging conditions.
The 2025 Rosé Wine, awarded a grand gold medal, stood out in tastings that spanned regions in countries such as the Azores (Portugal), the Canary Islands, Catalonia, Asturias, Galicia, Madrid, and Guadalajara (Spain), Tuscany, Piedmont, Sardinia, Liguria, and Abruzzo (Italy), Cyprus, Santorini, Epirus, and Florina (Greece), Germany, and Luxembourg.
According to the competition rules, wines are awarded a Grand Gold Medal, Gold Medal, or Silver Medal, provided they exceed the minimum score of 85 points and subject to the limit of 30% of the entered wines.
The organizers emphasize that wines of “the very highest caliber” were tasted in this edition, with several Grand Gold Medals awarded to wines scoring above 93 points.
For Rosando Monteiro, this distinction is the result of the joint efforts of the winemakers, winery staff, and cooperative members.
It also represents recognition of an effort made in a context marked by successive challenges.
According to this official, these awards help enhance the value of the products, boost their promotion, and raise Cape Verde’s profile in the international market.
At the same time, they increase the cooperative’s responsibility to maintain and strengthen production, in a scenario where producers face new challenges related to grape varieties, climate change, and, above all, rainfall shortages.
With these three new awards, the Chã das Caldeiras Cooperative Winery now has a total of ten international medals, nine of which were won in competitions affiliated with Cervim in Italy, and one at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (Belgium), consolidating the presence of Fogo wines on the international scene.
The official awards ceremony for the 34th edition of the Mondial des Vins Extrêmes is scheduled for November 21 at the Vinseum – Museum of Wine Cultures of Catalonia.
As a new feature of this edition, the wines awarded the Grand Gold Medal will also be featured at the Cervim booth during the 35th Merano Wine Festival in Italy.
The wines from the Chã das Caldeiras Winery/Cooperative have already earned a dozen medals: two Grand Gold Medals for the 2024 vintage Chã Branco and the 2025 vintage Rosé, and six Gold Medals for the “Chã Branco” wines from the 2021, 2023, and 2025 vintages, “Chã Tinto” from the 2022 and 2024 vintages, and “Chã Passito” from the 2023 and 2025 vintages, as well as a silver medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (CMB).
