This year, the city council will not be holding the usual Freedom Run and has decided to focus on celebrating National Heroes' Day, on January 20, by promoting the first edition of the Heroes' Run.

More than two million escudos in prizes will be distributed by the Institute of Sport and Youth (IDJ) in the special edition of the Freedom Run, which will take place next Tuesday, January 13, in celebration of the 35th anniversary of Freedom and Democracy, covering various categories and levels.

The announcement comes at a time when the usual Freedom Run, organized by Praia City Council and already in its 17th edition, will not be held this year by the city council, which has decided to focus the celebrations on National Heroes' Day, on January 20, promoting the 1st edition of the Heroes' Run.

In statements to Balai, Óscar Rodrigues, the Praia City Council's sports councillor, denied that the Freedom Run had been canceled, explaining that this year the council decided to focus on celebrating National Heroes' Day", which is marked annually on January 20, with various sporting, cultural and musical activities.

In the meantime, the IDJ has gone ahead with the organization of the Freedom Run, scheduled for January 13, starting at 8 a.m. in Largo do Estádio da Várzea.

According to the information released by the Institute, the prize money exceeds two million escudos and will be awarded up to 10th place, male and female, with the following amounts per category:

In the Seniors category (13 km), 1st place receives 200,000 escudos, 2nd with 160,000, 3rd with 100,000, followed by prizes of 60,000, 40,000, 30,000, 20,000, 15,000, 10,000 and 8,000 escudos.

In the Veterans' race (6 km), the prizes range from 50,000 escudos for the winner of the race, 40,000 for the runner-up and 30,000 for third place, progressively going down to 5,000 escudos for 10th place.

In the Paralympic category (6 km), the amounts are identical, with 50,000 escudos for the first-placed runner and prizes awarded up to 10th place.

In the Paralympic Wheelchair category (100 meters), first place receives 20,000 escudos, second 15,000, third 12,000, fourth 10,000, fifth 8,000, while from sixth to tenth place each runner receives 5,000 escudos.

The same values apply to the Youth category (100 meters), with prizes ranging from 20,000 escudos for the winner to 5,000 escudos for those classified between sixth and tenth place.

The IDJ stresses that the value of more than two million escudos in prizes is intended to encourage the participation of athletes, occasional practitioners and the community in general.
