Orlando Dias declares that he is again a candidate for the leadership of the MPD

The former MpD deputy Orlando Dias, who has already contested the leadership of the party in 2023, said that he will be a candidate for the presidency of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), after the announcement of the resignation of the current president Ulisses Correia e Silva, following the results of this Sunday's legislative elections.

"In coherence with my announcement after the internal elections of the MpD in 2023, I declare that I will be a candidate for the leadership of the party at the next National Convention.

"In coherence with the announcement I made after the MpD's 2023 internal elections and with the aim of reorganizing the MpD, I declare that I will be a candidate for the party's leadership at the next National Convention," wrote Orlando Dias on social media this Tuesday, 19.

It should be recalled that, in January 2025, Orlando Dias had publicly stated that he was "not a candidate for the leadership of the MpD", after a meeting of the party's National Directorate, although he left criticisms of the current internal orientation.

On that occasion, the MP argued that "the party's leadership intends to keep everything the same, betting on the same recipes that have already been confirmed to be the wrong path, which can only lead to further defeats".

The president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), Ulisses Correia e Silva, acknowledged the party's defeat in the 2026 legislative elections on Sunday night. The leader said that the MpD "failed to achieve its goal of winning the elections" or of continuing to govern Cape Verde.

During his speech, Ulisses Correia e Silva also announced that he will resign from the party presidency, defending the need to renew the internal leadership.

"I'm going to resign as president of the MpD so that, at the party convention, a new president, new bodies and new leaders can be chosen," he declared.
