PAICV officially supports the re-candidacy of current mayors
The African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV-opposition) today reiterated its support for the current mayors assigned to the party and said that they will announce the nominated candidates by March of this year.
The secretary general, Julião Varela, spoke at a press conference about the Court of Auditors' opinion regarding the 2021 State accounts, adding that there is a process underway in the various municipalities to identify potential candidates for a strong investment in 2024 local elections.
Regarding the desire expressed by the MpD to resume the “development process” of the Praia City Council, he responded that “dreaming is not prohibited” and that the frustrated attempts to suffocate Francisco Carvalho’s governance by making budgets and activity plans unfeasible were just “ demonstrates a terrible strategy” to come to power.
“The people of Praia do not forget the governance carried out in recent years with several aspects highlighted as signs of corruption in relation to land and the use of public resources in a way that Cape Verdeans will know how to evaluate and will know how to distinguish the intention of the MpD and the reality that the Cidade da Praia offers” he contested, adding that the process is already well underway.
According to Julião Varela, the governance of the Praia council team is guided by “transparency and rigor” in public matters, working to improve the living conditions of Praia residents.
The party that had been led by Janira Hopffer Almada in the 2020 municipal elections managed to win the elections in five of the nine municipalities in Santiago, such as Praia, São Domingos, Santa Cruz, Ribeira Grande de Santiago and Tarrafal, and also the municipal council of São Filipe and Mosteiros in Fogo and on the island of Boa Vista.
The president of the National Elections Commission (CNE) announced on July 13, 2023 that, with the last elections taking place in October, “it provides a basis” that this year they should be held between September and November.
As he explained, it is up to the Government to indicate the date of the upcoming municipal elections and that the CNE intends to draw up a “structured” plan for the 2024 elections that can incorporate the wishes of organizations and political parties.
