The municipal initiative aimed not only to salute the individual career of a figure who has become synonymous with altruism and entrepreneurship, but also to publicly validate the long-standing presence and invaluable contribution of the Cape Verdean community in Pawtucket's economic, social and cultural development.

António Gomes, affectionately called "Totche" by everyone, personified the true spirit of the Cape Verdean diaspora in the United States. Over the decades, he has established himself as a successful business pillar, demonstrating that commercial growth and social development must go hand in hand. Through his businesses and his strong civic leadership, he has opened doors to newcomers, supported social causes without regard for rewards and actively promoted the identity cohesion of his community.

His loss was deeply felt throughout the New England region, leaving an immense void. However, his example of resilience and his unconditional love for his origins and the city that welcomed him continue to inspire new generations of leaders and citizens. The "Community Spotlight" instituted by the municipal executive thus serves as a solemn testament that his impact will never be forgotten.

"António 'Totche' Gomes' leadership and heart represented the best of our city. He didn't just build thriving businesses; he built bridges, brought people together and ensured that no one in the Cape Verdean community was left behind. By dedicating 'Brava Way,' we are ensuring that his legacy and the proud history of Bravos in Pawtucket are etched into the very urban fabric of our city forever." Donald R. Grebien, Mayor of the City of Pawtucket

The choice of Conant Street to receive the honorary designation of "Brava Way" is one of crucial geographic and historical symbolism. For several decades, that urban artery has been the commercial, residential and cultural epicenter for hundreds of families from the island of Brava, in Cape Verde. It was there that Cape Verdean resilience was transformed into grocery stores, factories, small businesses and community meeting places that revitalized Pawtucket.

The honorary dedication represents official recognition that Pawtucket's identity is inseparable from the cultural heritage of its emigrants. The fixing of the "Brava Way" toponymic plaques celebrates the resilience of this community, which has preserved its traditions, its music and its values of solidarity, enriching the cultural diversity of the state of Rhode Island.

The municipal administration and local associations, as well as neighboring communities, joined in this public act of celebration. More than just a posthumous tribute, the dedication of the "Brava Way" is seen as a moment of cultural affirmation and the transmission of fundamental values for the future.

With this act, the City of Pawtucket reaffirms its commitment to valuing the stories of migration that have shaped the region's contemporary landscape. The name of António Gomes "Totche" and the pride of the island of Brava now remain immortalized in the everyday landscape, reminding all passersby on a daily basis of the strength of work, unity and community pride.
