Pawtucket Hosts Mayor of Brava on Historic Visit to Officialize Sister City Partnership

The City of Pawtucket will host an official delegation led by the Hon. Amandio Brito, in a visit considered historic for the formalization of a Sister Cities partnership between Pawtucket and the island of Brava.

The initiative aims to strengthen the historical, cultural and community ties between Pawtucket and Brava by promoting cultural exchange, civic cooperation and community development opportunities between the two communities.

The official welcoming ceremony and signing of the Sister Cities Agreement will take place on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. in Pawtucket City Hall, located on the third floor of the City Council Chambers at 137 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

Soon after the ceremony, at 6:15 p.m., the official handover of an ambulance from the City of Pawtucket to the City of Brava will take place in a ceremony at the Pawtucket Fire Station 2, located at 155 Roosevelt Avenue. The donation symbolizes the spirit of solidarity, cooperation and friendship that will mark this new partnership between the two cities.

The celebrations will continue on Saturday, May 23, at 11 a.m., with the official inauguration of "Brava Way," at the intersection of Conant Street and Carpenter Street in Pawtucket. The tribute recognizes the generations of Cape Verdeans, especially Bravenses, whose work, sacrifice and perseverance have contributed significantly to the growth and strengthening of the city.

During the ceremony, a memorial flower will also be dedicated in honor of Antonio "Totche" Gomes, a Pawtucket businessman who passed away on December 31, 2025. Prior to his passing, Antonio worked closely with the mayor and city administration to realize the tribute to the island of Brava through the renaming of the street, celebrating the legacy and contributions of the Cape Verdean community in Pawtucket.

In case of rain, Saturday's ceremony will be moved to Working Man Distillers.
