The mayor of Brava, Francisco Tavares, considered the creation of the municipality, in 1992, at the time of the first municipal elections and the creation of the municipality, as a “huge gain”.

In an interview with Inforpress, the mayor stressed that the gains are “indisputable, unavoidable and significant” in all areas.

According to the same source, in 1992, the situation on the island was “precarious” in almost all sectors, remembering that the electrical coverage was only in a part of the now city of Nova Sintra and in a small part of Nossa Senhora do Monte, which at the time , it was not yet a village.

Incidentally, he reinforced that even though it is available in some parts from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm, accounting for a total of five hours a day and, at this moment, they have reached a total of 100 percent (%) coverage in all locations and in about 90% of inhabited dwellings.

In addition to electricity, the mayor also highlighted improvements in water supply, which at the time was done in fountains, noting that now the island has only two fountains in operation to serve less than ten families.

He also spoke of the gains achieved in the area of telecommunications, streets, solid waste collection system, among others.

Health and the social issue were highlighted, mainly in the area of housing rehabilitation, construction of bathrooms, “a large number of supports” for health and patient transfers, monthly visits from specialists and improvements in living conditions and many families, among others.

However, Francisco Tavares says he is aware that some issues still “need to be resolved”, pointing out Brava’s connection with the other islands, although, he stressed that from the time until now there has been a “great improvement”.

In the area of Education, he pointed out that at the time the island did not have a high school and “few studied, because many parents were unable to send their children to Cidade da Praia” to continue their studies.

But, from 1995 onwards, the lyceum began to operate, which, according to him, was an initiative of the city council supported by the Ministry of Education that allowed students to continue their studies, and even kindergartens that did not exist, today, already have a network.

He also highlighted school transport which is 100 percent (%) provided by the city council to all students.

Still in the area of Education, the mayor of Brava said that the municipality benefits young people with training after secondary education, also pointing to a “certain dynamic” for professional training provided on the island, even without a training center.

“Talking about the municipality of Brava today is talking about constant gains over the years”, concluded Francisco Tavares.
