Prime Minister Attends UN General Assembly for the First Time
Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho is attending the United Nations (UN) General Assembly for the first time, where he will deliver his first speech before dozens of heads of state and government.
The head of government is traveling this weekend to the United States of America (U.S.), where he will represent Cape Verde at the 81stUnited Nations General Assembly in New York, under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Serves Everyone,” taking place from September 21 to 26.
The government delegation includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities, Manuel Amante da Rosa, and the Minister of Culture, Creative Industries, and Youth, Sports, António Duarte, and Family, Inclusion, Social Development, and Labor, Adélsia Almeida.
In New York, Francisco Carvalho will participate on the 21st in an event organized by the European Union and in the meeting “Championing Diversity in Times of Adversity: Standing Up for LGBTI Persons,” as well as in a ministerial roundtable organized by the United Kingdom.
On the 22nd, he will attend the opening of the general debate of the 81st session of the General Assembly, the high-level meeting on the implementation of the Pact for the Future in Africa, and a meeting dedicated to protecting children’s rights in the context of artificial intelligence.
The agenda also includes a reception hosted by the President of the United States on the occasion of the General Assembly.
Scheduled for September 23 are the high-level panel “Reaffirming the Promise of Peace: Using the Power We Have,” organized by Finland, the high-level meeting marking the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development, where the Prime Minister will deliver remarks, and the launch of the OceanEye Alliance, an initiative by the European Union and Canada aimed at strengthening ocean observation.
Also on that day, Francisco Carvalho will participate in the UN Secretary-General’s high-level meeting on climate action and a just transition, where he will also deliver remarks.
On the 24th, he will participate in the AOSIS leaders’ meeting and the high-level meeting on existential threats arising from rising sea levels, where he will speak and serve as co-chair.
On the 25th, he is scheduled to participate in the high-level meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.
On the 26th, he will speak during the general debate and hold a bilateral meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
While still in the United States, from September 27 to 30, the delegation led by the Prime Minister will visit the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where it will hold several meetings with Cape Verdean communities.
During the trip, Francisco Carvalho is expected to meet with the governor of Massachusetts, the governor of Rhode Island, a group of senators, and the mayor of Boston.
The itinerary includes a visit to Lilla Frederick School, meetings with young Cape Verdean entrepreneurs and professional women, a visit to a factory owned by a Cape Verdean businessman, and visits to other businesses run by Cape Verdean immigrants.
The Cape Verdean-American Veterans Memorial and the Cape Verde Museum in Pawtucket are also part of the itinerary, which includes a meeting with Rhode Island’s Cape Verdean community.
The official mission to the United States of America runs from September 20 to October 1, with the delegation scheduled to return on October 2.
