Prime Minister classifies School Sports Olympics as a "very strong breeding ground" for developing talent

The Prime Minister was speaking to the press at the opening of the 4th edition of the School Sports Olympics (ODE), which will bring together around 1,400 participants, including athletes, coaches, teachers, staff and volunteers, from the 22nd to the 29th of this month in the city of Praia.

According to the Prime Minister, the event represents, first and foremost, a great celebration of sport for the young representatives of all the islands.

"We're talking about more than a thousand participants in the various sports. It's a time for them to compete, to get to know each other, to get to know the islands where the games are being held, but essentially to promote school sport," he said.

For Ulisses Correia e Silva, this competition creates the conditions for young people to reach a competitive high point, the result of a journey that begins in local competitions and culminates in a major national meeting.

"And remember that some champions have already come out of these Olympics, firstly in the CPLP games, which is important because it's a very strong breeding ground," he said, stressing the importance of school sport in training new talent.

On the other hand, he stressed that the initiative promotes values associated with Olympism, such as fair play, tolerance and mutual respect, for whom it is relevant not only in terms of sport, but also in the civic training of young people.

On the occasion, he reiterated that the event was here to stay, with the aim of consolidating school sport as the basis of the national sports system.

Considered the biggest school sports event in the country, the ODEs promote, according to the government, the practice of sport, healthy habits, civic values, healthy coexistence and the strengthening of self-esteem among teenagers and young people.

The competitions will take place in various disciplines, and during the week there are also visits to the Old Town, institutional activities, as well as talks and open conversations at the accommodation venues.
