Seismic activity on Ilha Brava mobilizes authorities
Seismic activity with several low-magnitude tremors was recorded on Brava Island, initiated by a 4.1 earthquake. No damage has been reported so far, and the authorities are monitoring the situation.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, April 29, 2026, Ilha Brava recorded a sequence of low-magnitude seismic events, according to official information from the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG). The activity began at 1:32 p.m. (Cape Verde time) and is characterized by several consecutive tremors of low intensity.
The first recorded earthquake was of magnitude 4.1, located between the towns of Cova Joana and Mato, at a depth of approximately 2 kilometers. Since then, other events have been detected, leading the authorities to maintain continuous and detailed monitoring of the situation.
Despite the frequency of the tremors, the INMG reports that, so far, there is no indication of significant damage or relevant impacts on the population. Nevertheless, experts are continuing to analyze the data collected to assess the evolution of the phenomenon.
The authorities are calling on the population to remain calm and recommend following official information exclusively. The Brava City Council has guaranteed that it is in permanent contact with the competent authorities and civil protection services, keeping all the means at the ready to ensure the safety of the residents.
