35 years of democracy, episode 2 - six presidents and an island, the municipal leadership of President José Maria Barros

Nova Sintra City, February 08, 2026 (Bravanews) - José Maria Barros occupies a prominent place in Cape Verde's recent political history and, in a very particular way, in the democratic memory of the island of Brava. The second mayor of Brava in the democratic era, he was one of the most influential figures of the Movement for Democracy (MPD) on the island, from the very beginning of the party's foundation, establishing himself as a leader with firm convictions, a clear vision and a profound sense of public mission.

35 years of democracy, episode 2 - six presidents and one island, the municipal leadership of President José Maria Barros

A historic MPD militant, José Maria Barros was among those who helped structure and consolidate the party in Brava during a decisive period in Cape Verde's democratic transition. His political action was marked by a strong connection to the people, the uncompromising defense of fundamental freedoms and a serious commitment to the principles enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of the Republic.

Elected Mayor of Brava for the term from 1996 to 2000, with Jose Goncalves as President of the Municipal Assembly, Barros carried out his duties with distinction, vigor and responsibility. At the head of the municipality's affairs, he sought to affirm a governance that was close to the citizens, aware of the island's enormous structural challenges, but determined to promote local development, institutional dignity and the strengthening of municipal autonomy. His leadership marked a political era in Brava, remembered for the charisma, competence and firmness with which he represented the MPD.

With regard to the structuring works carried out during her mandate, Bravanews notes that it does not currently have detailed information on a wide range of relevant projects or investments carried out during that period. Nevertheless, it is important to remember the completion of the Aquiles de Oliveira Municipal Stadium, a sporting facility of great symbolism for the island, which began to serve Bravense's youth and boost the practice of sport, remaining to this day a reference in the municipality.

In addition to municipal governance, José Maria Barros served Cape Verde as a National Member of Parliament, bringing the voice of Brava to Parliament and contributing to the national political debate with seriousness, elevation and a sense of state. His death therefore represented a great loss not only for the MPD, but for the entire Cape Verdean political system, especially for Parliament, where he left a mark of democratic commitment and public service.

After his electoral defeat, he experienced one of the most difficult moments of his personal and political career, when he was dismissed from his job at EMPA, in an act widely perceived as political retaliation by well-identified PAICV figures. Despite the injustice and harshness of this decision, José Maria Barros never renounced his convictions. On the contrary, he remained firm, dignified and consistent, continuing to fight for the strengthening of democracy, freedom and the affirmation of the MPD's values.

A cultured, cordial, firm and at the same time humble person, José Maria Barros was a rare example of political coherence. He was able to defend the ideals of the MPD in the 1990s with integrity, at a time when Cape Verde's young democracy required courage, sacrifice and a sense of history. He embodied a generation of leaders who placed the public interest above personal and party conveniences.

José Maria Barros was not just a protagonist of Brava's political history; he was one of its most lucid interpreters and builders. His life and his path remain a reference for current and future generations, reminding us that politics, when done with principles, can be a true service to the community.

Peace to your soul.
