Cape Verde Boosts Hospital Capacity with a New Donation of Equipment from China

China has delivered a new shipment of medical equipment and supplies valued at approximately 40,000 euros to Cape Verde, as part of an initiative aimed at strengthening the response capacity of the national health system, particularly the Agostinho Neto University Hospital (HUAN) in Praia.

The donation includes surgical instruments, diagnostic equipment, emergency care and infusion supplies, cardiovascular monitoring devices, defibrillators, wheelchairs, stretchers, hospital furniture, surgical scrubs, and other materials used in the delivery of healthcare.

The handover took place at a time when Cape Verde is seeking to strengthen the capacity of its hospital facilities and improve the population’s access to specialized care. During the ceremony, Health Minister Lúcio Fernandes highlighted the importance of China’s support, noting that cooperation between the two countries goes beyond the provision of equipment and includes professional training, knowledge transfer, and technical assistance.

For Agostinho Neto University Hospital, the new resources are expected to help improve conditions for patient care, diagnosis, and treatment, in addition to strengthening the operational capacity of the country’s main hospital.

The initiative takes place in the context of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cape Verde and China. The Chinese ambassador to Cape Verde, Zhang Yang, reaffirmed Beijing’s willingness to continue supporting the country in the health sector.

Although the information released about the donation identifies HUAN as the main beneficiary, the initiative also raises a relevant question for other islands: Will some of this equipment be made available to hospitals outside of Praia, specifically the Brava Hospital?

The decentralization of medical resources is an important issue for the islands, where regional hospitals play a key role in serving local populations. Equipment such as stretchers, wheelchairs, emergency devices, and certain diagnostic instruments could, depending on the needs and the distribution determined by health authorities, represent a significant boost for hospitals such as the one in Brava.

To date, no official information has been provided confirming that equipment from this donation will be allocated to Brava Hospital. Any distribution to other healthcare facilities will depend on decisions by the Ministry of Health and the needs identified at each facility.

Cooperation between Cape Verde and China in the health sector has included, in addition to the provision of equipment, the presence of Chinese medical teams, training for Cape Verdean professionals, and technical assistance—a partnership that both countries intend to continue deepening.

For islands such as Brava, the focus now is on whether the benefits of this cooperation will also translate into concrete improvements to the facilities and equipment available locally.
