Maria Fernandes, a Cape Verdean emigrant living in the United States, expressed her willingness today to continue supporting social initiatives aimed at the elderly population, while also calling on other emigrants to contribute. Maria Fernandes, who works in the United States in the field of elder care, believes that the professional experience she has gained further strengthens her commitment to this cause and, therefore, calls on everyone to come together, within their means, for the well-being of the island’s elderly.

“In the United States, my job is to care for the elderly. That’s why I’m always ready to help in any way I can, so that everyone is well cared for,” she said. During her stay in Brava, the emigrant intends to strengthen her ties with the Red Cross and the Dona Edith Gomes da Silva Day Center, institutions that play “an important role” in supporting and caring for the elderly population. For Fernandes, supporting the elderly should be a shared responsibility, involving not only institutions but also the community, family members, and, above all, Cape Verdeans living abroad.

In this regard, she appeals to emigrants scattered across different countries to contribute whatever they can. According to her, even a small contribution can make a difference when it becomes a collective gesture of solidarity. “You don’t need to have much to help. Everyone can contribute what they can. The most important thing is not to forget our elderly and to ensure they have better living conditions, care, and dignity,” she emphasized.

The initiative also aims to foster closer ties between the emigrant community and Brava’s social institutions, creating opportunities for emigrants to support, on a regular or ad hoc basis, projects aimed at the elderly. Maria Fernandes thus considers herself a partner of the Red Cross and the Dona Edith Gomes da Silva Day Center, putting her experience and time at the service of a cause she considers essential to the community.
