Brava and Pawtucket Officialize Historic Twinning Partnership Between Municipalities

The city of Pawtucket in the United States is preparing to officially welcome the mayor of Brava, Amandio Brito, in what is considered a historic moment for relations between the Cape Verdean community in the United States and the island of Brava, in Cape Verde.

The visit marks a decisive step towards the formalization of a Sister City Partnership agreement between the city of Pawtucket and the island of Brava, based on historical, cultural and community ties that have bound the two localities for decades.

According to the official program released by the local authorities, the signing ceremony for the agreement will take place on Thursday, May 21, at 5:30 p.m. in Pawtucket's City Hall. The event will include an official welcoming ceremony, signing of the twinning agreement, press conference and a donation of rescue equipment.

The celebrations continue on Saturday, May 23, at 11 a.m., with a memorial tribute to António Gomes "Totche" and the official opening of "Brava Way," in a ceremony that will take place at Conant Street and Carpenter Street.

The initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between the two municipalities in areas such as culture, youth, education, tourism and community development, as well as recognizing the strong presence of the Cape Verdean diaspora in Rhode Island, especially the Brava community.

Community leaders believe that this partnership could open doors to future cultural and institutional exchanges, while strengthening Cape Verdean identity among the new generations emigrating to the United States.
