The handover ceremony was presided over by the president of the IDJ, José Eduardo dos Santos, who stressed that the initiative was the result of a commitment made when the multi-sports hall was opened, when it was found that there was no suitable equipment for practicing basketball.

"At the time of the opening of this multi-purpose facility, we said that it was necessary to develop basketball in this region and elsewhere in the municipality. We noticed that the sports center didn't have a pair of boards and we committed ourselves to getting that material. Today we're making that happen," he said.

According to him, the IDJ is satisfied with the enthusiasm shown by the children and young people in the community, who are already showing an interest in practicing the sport, stressing that the existence of infrastructures without equipment limits the development of other sports.

Santos also explained that the IDJ's trip to the island of Brava includes the delivery of sports equipment to the high schools, as part of the School Sports Olympics project, with the aim of supporting school sports and preparing the schools for the competitions scheduled for next March.

"We are supporting all of Brava's secondary schools with a significant kit of sports equipment, to better prepare for the Olympics, but also for the continued development of sport in schools," he stressed.

In the same context, the president of the IDJ announced the confirmation of the signing of a program-contract with the Brava City Council, to support the refurbishment of the Aquiles de Oliveira Municipal Stadium, in Nova Sintra, which should soon present a new image.

In relation to other sports, José Eduardo dos Santos acknowledged the need to introduce volleyball equipment on the island, stressing that the lack of poles makes it impossible to practice the sport.

"Talent exists on all the islands, but we need to create the conditions for practicing. We are committed to creating these conditions, both in schools and in communities, to promote a greater diversification of sport, beyond eleven-a-side soccer and futsal," he stressed.

For his part, the councillor for sport, João Monteiro, considered basketball to be an important sport and highlighted the growing dynamics of its practice on the island, underlining the enthusiasm of young people, especially in the community of Lomba, with the arrival of the equipment.

According to the mayor, the equipment that has now been delivered will not only benefit the sports community, but also the educational community, since schools will also be able to use the equipment.

With regard to volleyball, João Monteiro revealed that he has already been in contact with the president of IDJ to find solutions to reactivate the sport on the island.

"Volleyball used to be very popular on Brava. I think it's time to bring this sport back," he concluded.
