Farmers' exchange on Ilha Brava: an experience of sharing and learning on the ground
On June 12, the MAA Delegation on Ilha Brava, in conjunction with the Directorate of Rural Extension Services and Agrarian Economy (DSEREA), held an agricultural exchange with farmers from the town of Ferreiros.
The activity, provided for in the sector's annual plan, aimed to promote the exchange of experiences and good practices between agricultural producers, strengthening the knowledge about sustainable agriculture, water management and resolution of irrigation conflicts, with a focus on increasing the production and resilience of agricultural activity.
During the exchange, the participants - farmers, technicians and extension workers - had the opportunity to visit agricultural plots and the school's demonstration field in Fajã d'Água and Nova Sintra, observing up close production practices adapted to local realities, such as the use of drip irrigation technology in water-scarce areas.
The exchange also focused on raising farmers' awareness of more sustainable practices, increasing their understanding of the impacts of efficient water management, as well as encouraging them to replicate the good practices observed in their localities.
This initiative was an important step towards strengthening producers' ability to adapt and fostering more conscious attitudes towards the use of natural resources, thus contributing to a more resilient and productive agricultural sector.
