The president of the Association of Municipalities of Fogo and Brava, who was also speaking at the opening of Provinho 2025, highlighted with "emotion" the symbolic and historical value of the wine produced on the island.
In the words of the mayor, Fogo is not only the island of the volcano, it is also the cradle of one of the most unique wine traditions in Cape Verde and perhaps Africa, born on the fertile slopes shaped by the force of nature.
"Since the 19th century, when settlers, missionaries, farmers and local communities began planting the first vineyards in the black and fertile lands of Chã, Fogo's wine has become a true symbol of identity," said Nuías Silva, for whom "Fogo's wine is not just a drink, it's liquid history, it's bottled tradition and it's the pride of the people of Fogo."
The mayor stressed that each bottle reflects the courage and resilience of generations who have mastered ancestral techniques passed down from father to son.
Among the major challenges, Nuías Silva highlighted the continuous improvement of quality, DOC Fogo certification, winery modernization, water sustainability and full integration into the national and international value chain.
In the mayor's words, Provinho brings together producers, researchers, entrepreneurs and investors, acting as a strategic platform to boost ecotourism, the agro-industry and the internationalization of products from Fuego.
The president also recalled the central role of local authorities in promoting sustainable development, based on valuing traditional production.
The recent declaration of Fogo as a Special Economic Zone, he pointed out, opens doors to new opportunities, especially in agro-tourism, volcano science and agro-industrial processing.
The mayor highlighted projects such as the future Enoteca de São Filipe and the island's first agri-food park with two components, agri-business and the new economic model, reinforcing the island's ambition.
Nuías Silva also stressed the need for structuring solutions for inter-island mobility, advocating the creation of an inter-municipal maritime transport company to ensure competitiveness, reduce costs and integrate Fogo and Brava into the national economic circuit.
The mayor stressed that the "new Fogo" is competitive, attractive and ready to receive investment, always with wine as the greatest symbol of the island's soul.
