And without assistance, which will be unprecedented in the history of the Atlantic crossing.

Fabien Leroux, 51 years old, father of 6 children, is preparing himself physically and psychologically to face the dangers of the sea in what he considers to be the biggest challenge of his life.

This greens manager and amateur swimmer, originally from Guerande, in the west of France, announced that he will leave Cape Verde alone on December 16th to swim to the island of Barbados, in the North Atlantic.

Swimming 12 hours a day, he plans to cover the nearly 4,000 kilometers that separate the two countries in 50 days, arriving in Barbados in early February 2024.

He did not say how he intends to avoid the dangers of the Atlantic Ocean (sharks, currents, changes in temperature) but assured that he would not have assistance or anyone around.

His only “companion” will be a kind of raft, built for this purpose, where he will have to eat, rest and sleep.

CALL ATTENTION TO OCEAN POLLUTION

In addition to being a personal challenge, with this feat Fabien also wants to raise public awareness about the problem of ocean pollution by plastics.

Every year 12 million tons of plastic material are thrown into the sea and in 30 years, if nothing is done - he said - there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.
