Ilha Brava without an X-ray technician and patients forced to travel to Fogo in emergencies
Nova Sintra City, August 18, 2025 (Bravanews) - The population of the island of Brava is facing yet another difficulty in the health sector, with the absence of a technician responsible for the X-ray service at the local Health Center. The situation, which has been going on for several days, has forced emergency patients to travel to the neighboring island of Fogo, increasing the risks for those who need immediate diagnoses.

According to reports from users and family members, any situation that requires imaging tests, even in cases considered urgent, cannot be attended to in Brava. This means that accidents, falls, suspected fractures or other problems that depend on a radiological examination are subject to the availability of sea transportation to Fogo, which doesn't always happen in good time due to factors such as the state of the sea, vessel schedules and medical evacuation limitations.
Health professionals on the island have warned of the risks this gap represents. "We're talking about situations that can endanger lives. A quick diagnosis often makes the difference between a safe recovery and serious complications," said a source linked to the sector.
The population, for its part, criticizes what it considers to be yet another example of inequality in access to basic services between the islands. "On Brava, we always have to wait longer, fight harder and take more risks. For a simple examination, we have to travel to Fogo. This is inhumane," lamented one resident.
The community hopes for a quick and definitive solution, pointing out that health is a fundamental right and that Brava's insularity cannot be synonymous with abandonment.
