Legislative elections 2026: PAICV renews 70% of lists and bets on independents and women
The African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) announced on Tuesday a renewal of around 70% of its candidate lists for the legislative elections on May 17, including independents and five women as list leaders.
At a press conference in the capital, the party's secretary-general, Vladmir Silves Ferreira, said that the lists are diverse and made up of professionals with "solid academic preparation", ready to serve the country responsibly.
"Compared to the current legislature, the lists as a whole have more than 70% new faces. There is a great deal of renewal, which gives guarantees that the country will improve with the PAICV," he said, stressing that the party has fully complied with the Parity Law.
"In our list, we have managed to harmonize youth with experience, bringing together people with a solid background and accumulated knowledge, alongside new voices, new ideas and a new, renewed energy," he pointed out.
For the PAICV secretary-general, this combination gives confidence to face the challenges of the present and build solutions for the future.
Vladmir Silves Ferreira pointed out that six of the 13 list leaders are first-timers in parliamentary candidacies, which demonstrates the ability to attract new cadres.
"It [the list] is born out of the deep yearnings of our population, yearnings for change, for more opportunities, for a country that works better for everyone," said Silves Ferreira, who felt that Cape Verdeans want concrete answers to their yearnings.
Questioned about the absence of influential names in the parliamentary bench, such as Démis Almeida, João Baptista Pereira, or Fidel Cardoso de Pina, the secretary-general classified the process as "natural", comparing party participation to a "relay game" where renewal is permanent.
"We have a sufficiently capable and diverse list for which Cape Verdeans can feel represented," he said, highlighting the inclusion of independent candidates in the Santiago Sul and São Vicente constituencies.
For Vladmir Silves Ferreira, now is the time to mobilize, to join forces, and to believe that it is possible to do better from 17 May onwards.
72 seats in the National Assembly will be up for grabs in the legislative elections on May 17. The deadline for formalizing candidacies in the courts is today, April 7.
