The Cape Verdean community is getting ready to take to the streets this Sunday, July 5, to celebrate the 54thCape Verdean Recognition Parade, one of the largest cultural events of the diaspora, which this year marks the 51st anniversary of Cape Verde’s independence.

The celebration will begin at 12:00 p.m., starting at Buttonwood Park, at the corner of Rockdale Avenue and Union Street, bringing together thousands of people in a display of pride in Cape Verdean history, culture, and identity.

The parade will feature a diverse program for all ages, including clowns, soap bubble entertainment, dance groups, drum corps, community organizations, and plenty of traditional music, creating a festive atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

This year, the celebration will also hold special significance as it pays tribute to the Blue Sharks, who staged a historic run at the 2026 World Cup. In Cape Verde’s World Cup debut, the national team earned the world’s admiration by advancing past the group stage without losing a single game in regulation time and by taking world champion Argentina to extra time in the round of 16.

Organizers emphasize that the event is open to everyone, regardless of nationality, inviting the entire population to discover and celebrate Cape Verde’s rich cultural heritage through music, cuisine, traditions, and a spirit of community.

Entire families are expected to fill the streets to celebrate not only the independence won in 1975, but also the pride of a community that continues to preserve its roots and strengthen the ties between Cape Verde and the diaspora.

In a year marked by the international success of the Tubarões Azuis and the strengthening of a sense of unity among Cape Verdeans scattered across the globe, the parade promises to be one of the community’s greatest expressions of national pride.
