According to Nuias Silva, the four municipalities of the islands of Fogo (São Filipe, Mosteiros and Santa Catarina) and Brava are preparing to take an "important step" in promoting regional development with the proposal to create an inter-municipal maritime transport company.

According to the mayor, the creation of the company is a measure and a "strategic milestone" to guarantee connectivity between the islands of Fogo and Brava and with the island of Santiago, benefiting various sectors of the local economy.

"Taking charge of our own development"

He also explained that the creation of the company will not only serve to respond to the difficulty of maritime connections in the region, but also to ensure "emergency medical evacuations", as well as the flow of agricultural, fishing and livestock production between the islands and to the main markets.

"We are taking charge of our own development. We are no longer going to outsource this responsibility to either the public or private sector. The municipalities of Fogo and Brava are the masters of their destinies and must act in accordance with this responsibility," defended Nuias Silva.

In addition, the election of the new bodies of the Association of Municipalities of Fogo and Brava is planned.

The information was given yesterday, July 31, on the sidelines of a meeting with the resident representative of the Joint Office of UNDP, UNICEF and UNFPA, David Matern, who is visiting the Fogo/Brava region.

The resident representative of the Joint Office also found the idea of creating a regional transport company "very interesting", stressing that it will be an "important step" given that transport "is a challenge in the archipelago", especially for an island without an airport like Brava.
