In statements to Inforpress, resident João Barbosa said that the road linking Santa Bárbara to the Vinagre area is in poor condition, making it difficult to transport people and goods.
He explained that due to the dilapidated state of the road, many vehicles find it difficult to circulate and transport loads to the town.
"Cars can't carry loads because of the terrible road conditions," he said, adding that in several sections the roadsides are damaged and, most of the time, only light vehicles can get through.
The resident also pointed out that the ditches opened during works carried out by companies remain unrepaired, worsening the situation of the road and putting traffic at risk.
In view of this scenario, Barbosa called on the authorities to intervene to guarantee dignified access to the communities of Santa Bárbara, which, he said, "is often forgotten by the authorities".
José Cabral, who is also a resident, recalled that the road used to be in good condition, but the situation worsened after work began on the water desalination project.
According to this resident, ditches were dug during the works to lay pipes, but many of these spaces were poorly repaired, leading to potholes and irregularities along the road.
"There are a lot of potholes and even on foot we have difficulties," he said, adding that he has already reported the problem to the local authority several times, but so far he has received no response.
He also warned of the lack of protection at some points on the road, where, he said, there are no safety walls, which increases the risk for road users.
The resident also stressed the importance of the road that gives access to the Vinagre area, considered one of the island's tourist spots, which is visited by tourists and other visitors.
In view of this situation, the residents call on the competent authorities to intervene as soon as possible to ensure better mobility and safety conditions for the local population and visitors to the region.
