Health Minister announces construction of new health center on Brava island for the next parliamentary term
Cidade de Nova Sintra November 13, 2025 (Bravanews) - The Minister of Health, Jorge Figueiredo, has announced that the Cape Verdean government intends to go ahead, in the next legislature, with the construction of a new Health Center on the island of Brava, a long-standing demand of the population and local authorities.
According to the Minister, the new infrastructure is part of a plan to upgrade and modernize the country's health structures, with the aim of improving the provision of primary health care, guaranteeing better working conditions for professionals and responding to the specific needs of the most isolated populations.
During his speech at the debate on the State Budget for 2025, Jorge Figueiredo acknowledged that the current Brava health center faces structural and functional limitations, which make it difficult to respond adequately to emergency situations and the growing demand for health services on the island.
"Brava deserves a modern, functional health center adapted to new demands. This is a government commitment and we will make every effort to ensure that the project goes ahead at the start of the next parliamentary term," said the Minister.
The Bravense population, which has long been calling for better conditions in the health sector, received the announcement with expectation and caution, recalling that similar promises had been made in the past without coming to fruition.
The construction of the new Brava Health Center is seen as a strategic priority to ensure better access to health, reduce dependence on the Fogo Regional Hospital and strengthen the resilience of public services on one of the archipelago's smallest and most isolated islands.
