Ilha Brava: Corn shortage causes damage and concern for livestock farmers
Nova Sintra City, October 28, 2025 (Bravanews) - The shortage of corn and animal feed on Ilha Brava has caused considerable inconvenience and concern among local livestock farmers. This situation, which has manifested itself at different times, harms animal feed and directly affects the island's livestock sector.
Farmers have reported a significant increase in the cost of corn and feed, aggravated by periods of shortage of the product on the island. The shortage has sometimes led to an uneven increase in the prices charged by establishments.
Difficulty in logistics and inter-island transportation is often pointed to as a factor aggravating the situation, with Brava allegedly suffering the most in terms of cargo, compared to other islands.
The lack of adequate food and the high cost of acquiring corn and feed have a direct impact on the welfare of the animals and the economic viability of the breeders. The situation is even more critical in a context of wider concerns about drought and the management of water resources on the island.
The breeders are calling on the authorities and shipping companies to pay special attention to Ilha Brava, guaranteeing regular supplies at fairer prices, or through support to help mitigate the high costs of animal feed.
Despite the knowledge that this important product could arrive on the island within weeks, the constant fluctuation and uncertainty of supply keep farmers on their toes.
