Brava: Cement price soars from 1,265 to 1,500 escudos
Contractors on the island of Brava have expressed concern about the recent increase in the price of cement, from 1,265 escudos to 1,500 escudos, considering the rise to be exaggerated and with possible negative impacts on the construction sector. The cement distributor on the island of Brava, Dina Vicente, points to an increase applied by the supplier company Cimpor.
In statements to the media, contractor António Alves said that the change could cause damage, especially to work already budgeted for and underway, based on the previous price of the material.
According to him, while the new budgets may reflect the increase, the main concern is with contracts that have already been signed.
"At stake now are the works that are already underway, done on the basis of the old price of cement," he said.
Alves also criticized the way in which the increase was implemented, arguing that there should have been prior communication to professionals in the sector.

According to the contractor, the explanation put forward by the cement distributor on the island of Brava, Dina Vicente, points to an increase applied by the supplier company Cimpor.
He still considers the justification to be insufficient.
"From one hour to the next, this product has gone up excessively, and we, with work in progress, are going to suffer. One thousand five hundred escudos per bag is a lot," he said.
For his part, bricklayer Euclides Garcia shares the same opinion, warning that the rise will have a direct impact on the cost of construction.
Agggravation of the sector's difficulties
According to him, this sudden increase further aggravates the difficulties in the sector.
"On the other islands there are several cement suppliers and there is more choice. Here there is only one supplier, which means that the price is always higher. With this rise, costs are going up even more," he explained.
He added that, although there is still some work in progress, the uncertainty about the evolution of prices worries the workers.
"Yes, we have some work, but with this rise we don't know what might happen in the future, because the price is a bit exaggerated," he concluded.
It should be remembered that the island of Brava spent almost two months without cement and only received around three thousand bags of cement on March 10th.
At the time, as reported by A Nação Online, the company distributing cement on the island of Brava, Dina Vicente, started selling the bags to buyers on a rationed basis.
Each buyer will only be able to purchase between 15 and 20 bags, in an attempt to allow more people to have access to the product.
