The people of Lomba Tantum are still waiting for the cable car used to transport fish to be repaired
Cidade de Nova Sintra, July 27, 2025 - The population of Lomba Tantum, on the island of Brava, is still waiting with great anticipation and concern for the repair of the cable car that connects the fishing community of Tantum to Lomba. The infrastructure, which is essential for transporting fish, has been inoperable for over a year, directly affecting the local economy and the livelihoods of dozens of families.

The cable car, considered vital for transporting the fish caught in Tantum to the town of Lomba, where it is sold or transported to other parts of the island, has been a safe and efficient alternative to the land route, which is difficult to access and has poor conditions.
According to residents, the breakdown of the equipment has forced fishermen to resort to improvised means, such as manual transportation, which leads to significant losses of product and an increase in operating costs.
"We're losing fish every day. Without the cable car, it's very difficult to get the fish to Lomba quickly enough," laments one of the local fishermen. Community representatives, meanwhile, warn of the increasing risk of fishing activities being abandoned if the situation isn't resolved urgently.
In an interview with influencer Casimiro Lopes, the Mayor of Brava, Amandio Brito, says he is aware of the problem and guarantees that contacts are underway with the Central Government and partners to make it possible to repair the cable car. However, so far there is no official forecast for the work to begin.
Meanwhile, the people of Lomba Tantum are still waiting for a definitive solution to a problem that threatens not only the local economy, but also the survival of a fishing tradition that spans generations.
