In statements to Inforpress, Mayor Amândio Brito stated that a large part of the planned work has already been completed, including painting and other structural interventions in the building, with only some finishing touches remaining before the space can be considered 100% complete.
The project, which is funded under the United Nations Joint Programme, with support from Luxembourg cooperation and the Government of Cape Verde, has had its first tranche of funding applied to the execution of works already completed, according to the municipality.
However, the completion of the project now depends on the disbursement of the second tranche, which should arrive shortly.
The local authority assures that, as soon as the funds are available, the work will be completed and the reopening of the commercial space will be scheduled.
"After the completion of the work, the space will be handed over to the merchants who carry out their activity there, allowing for better working conditions for the people who earn their daily living there," he assured.
The city council emphasizes that the delay in completing the project is not related to problems in the execution of the works, but rather to waiting for the second disbursement of funding.
He further added that the situation is similar to that of other municipalities that also submitted projects under the same program and are also awaiting the second tranche.
On the 20th of this month, Brava Island is scheduled to receive a visit from a team from the Joint United Nations Programme, which will assess the project's implementation status and the management of the resources provided.
During the visit, the local authority intends to present the work already carried out and demonstrate that the necessary conditions are in place for the transfer of the second tranche, thus allowing the completion of the municipal market works.
