Brava: Red Cross promotes first aid and emergency response activities

The event is part of the celebrations for the International Day of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, which takes place on May 8th.

Speaking to Inforpress, the president of the Brava Local Council, Sónia Coelho, said that the initiative comes at a time when the population is still showing concern due to the latest earthquake on the island.

"We know that the population is all panicking about the latest earthquake, so we took the opportunity to demonstrate first aid and emergency response with the volunteers," she explained.

According to the same source, the event went well and enabled the volunteers to be better prepared to act in emergency situations, especially in support of the most vulnerable people.

"The action was very good and, as of today, the volunteers are better prepared to act in times like these to help vulnerable people. The Red Cross must always be prepared, bearing in mind that we also take care of many elderly people," she said.

The president also highlighted the contribution of the Civil Protection team during the training and the practical demonstrations carried out throughout the activity.

"The Civil Protection team explained very well, they even did some demonstrations and we are already prepared to intervene if necessary," she added.

With regard to the motto chosen for this year, "United for Humanity", she considered that it fits in with the reality of the island of Brava, which is frequently affected by earthquakes.

"We know that Brava is an island that always has earthquakes and our volunteers must always be prepared," she said.

Also as part of the celebrations, the Brava Red Cross plans to hold various activities throughout the month, including a solidarity walk, a blood donation campaign and recreational activities for children.
