According to the fishermen interviewed by Inforpress today, fishing in Furna has been hampered by the lack of infrastructures for access to the sea, namely fishing piers or boat moorings.

For Alfredo Garcia, having at least one mooring on Furna beach would solve a "major problem" for fishermen, who also need a beach that fits all their boats.

"Yes, we need a trawler, but we also need a very clean beach that can fit all the boats comfortably, that would be very good, because currently, apart from the terrible conditions on the beaches, space is very limited," he said.

Alfredo Garcia appealed to those in authority, namely the council and the government, to improve the working conditions of the fishermen in the Furna fishing community, a long-standing demand.

The fisherman António Andrade, who also shares the same opinion, pointed out that the project has been a promise from the authorities for several years, but so far nothing has been done.

According to the same source, the majority of dinghy owners have already suffered losses, because the boats are often damaged due to the poor condition of the beach where they drag their boats.

In this regard, he stressed the need for the competent authorities to heed the fishermen's pleas.

"The fishing sector is extremely important for the development of the island and beyond, so the municipality or the Ministry of the Sea must pay more attention to this area here on Brava," he concluded.
