"It's extremely serious that a party like PAICV attacks justice," says Ulisses Correia e Silva

The president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, power), Ulisses Correia e Silva, pointed the finger at the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), the opposition he believes is "attacking" justice.

The Chief Executive also made the accusations on Friday night, 12, at a dinner with party activists, supporters and friends to mark the opening of the political year, in one of the hotels in the city of Mindelo.

Ulisses Correia e Silva was reacting to the accusation made by the mayor of Praia, Francisco Carvalho, whose town hall was raided on Friday by the Attorney General's Office (PGR).

Francisco Carvalho, in a post on the internet, accused the PGR of acting under political influence, saying that the intervention was an attempt to impose "a political will on the municipality of Praia", associating this with the expression "whatever it takes", to the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva.

Ulisses Correia e Silva responded by saying that the MpD and its government do not interfere in justice and respect justice, judges and the judicial system.

"In a democratic state governed by the rule of law, no one is above the law, no one is outside its purview, neither citizens, nor governors, nor mayors," said the MpD leader.

That's why his party, according to the same source, considers it "extremely serious" that a party like PAICV should "attack" justice.

"What they don't want to talk about here is that judges, prosecutors, the Attorney General of the Republic, all magistrates can be influenced, manipulated," he said.

Ulisses Correia e Silva reiterated and said that it was "highly serious" that a party that wants to be in power, that wants to be the government, should be accusing the MpD and the government of using the justice system to carry out political persecution.

"If you don't respect justice in opposition, you won't respect justice if one day you are in power," added the president of the MpD, for whom this is an "extremely dangerous" sign for the rule of law.

He recalled that town halls linked to his party had been the subject of searches, but "never" had the party or the government accused the justice system of manipulation, interference or using means to determine certain ends.

"He who does not owe, does not fear", concluded Ulisses Correia e Silva.
