Last Wednesday, the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, received siblings Julius and Vanessa Britto, prominent members of the Cape Verdean diaspora in the United States, at the Presidential Palace. During the meeting, the Head of State reaffirmed his firm support for the return of the emblematic ship Ernestina to the archipelago in 2027, as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Independence.
Julius Britto, president of the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey Association (SEMA), confirmed that funds worth 2 million dollars are being mobilized to make this historic trip possible. President Neves called for a strong commitment from the Cape Verdean diaspora and the Massachusetts authorities to make this collective dream come true.
Vanessa Britto, a doctor and professor at the prestigious Brown University, also took part in the meeting. She has made a name for herself in the health sector and in promoting links between Cape Verde and the diaspora, having led three medical missions to the country.
The Britto brothers' visit symbolizes a deep connection with their Cape Verdean roots, especially with Rubon Manel, the place of origin of the family's great-grandfather, Bernardino Horta Varela, who emigrated to the USA in 1875. Four generations later, the Britto's return to celebrate their Cape Verdean heritage and identity.
The return of the ship Ernestina, considered an icon of Cape Verdean emigration, represents a powerful tribute to the courage of those who left in search of a better life, as well as an enduring symbol of love for Cape Verde.
