Mayor of Brava announces measures to modernize waste collection and treatment on the island
Nova Sintra City, January 25, 2026 (Bravanews) - The Mayor of Brava, Amândio Brito, recently revealed, during an interview on Cape Verde Radio's Outro Olhar program, concrete plans for the reorganization and modernization of waste collection and treatment on the island, highlighting the urgency of measures that promote public health and preserve the local environment.
According to Brito, the current practice of dumping waste in open-air areas is neither sustainable nor safe. "Collecting garbage in the place where the garbage is also dumped is not an advisable place, especially as it is in the open, which has not been prepared for the purpose," he said. He stressed that the current model poses environmental and health risks, making it essential to implement structured and appropriate solutions.
The mayor assured that the council already has the necessary resources to begin this transformation. "We already have the means and the equipment, these containers, these waste collection materials and also equipment for the people who deal with sanitation," he said. These materials are currently in Praia, but have already been dispatched and should arrive in Brava within a few days, marking the beginning of a new phase in waste management on the island.
Among the plans presented, Brito highlighted the need for a proper garbage truck, specifically a compactor truck, which will make it possible to optimize the collection and transport of garbage, making the process more efficient and safer for workers and the population in general.
In addition, the President emphasized the importance of waste treatment and waste separation, stressing that responsible waste management is not limited to collection, but also includes recycling strategies and proper processing. "Then it's a question of also working on the treatment of waste with a view to separating it," explained Brito, pointing to a future where Brava can integrate modern solid waste management practices.
Another prominent objective is the creation of a sanitary landfill on the island, which, according to the mayor, is essential to ensure that Brava remains clean, healthy and inviting for residents and visitors. "The issue of having a landfill is also an objective that we are pursuing and that needs to be achieved as soon as possible," he stressed.
With these measures, Brava Town Council aims to turn the island into an example of environmental management, balancing urban development, public health and environmental preservation. Amândio Brito concluded his speech by stressing that all these actions are fundamental to ensuring that Brava remains "a clean island, a healthy island, an inviting island".
